Oh Penguin Tree in Supracolor Soft watercolor pencils – Mama Elephant

Hi everyone! For the card of today I wanted to play a bit with my Caran d’Ache Supracolor Soft watercolor pencils. I chose to feature the Oh Penguin Tree from Mama Elephant which is really a lot of fun to color.

As I was going to use watercolor pencils, I had to make sure I used a waterproof ink for stamping. One of my favorite inks for this is VersaFine Onyx Black ink. I stamped the penguin tree on Fabriano Artistico Cold Press paper. If you prefer, there is also an extra white version, I worked with the traditional white myself.

There is also a process video available on my YouTube channel. If you don’t want to miss out on any of my videos, make sure to subscribe.

First I colored all the penguins with the Supracolor Soft pencils. Once I created the base layer, I blended it out with a damp watercolor brush (Da Vinci Cosmotop Spin). When doing this, you want to go from the light areas to the dark, to keep the highlights. After everything was dry, I added some more shadows by picking up color directly from the pencil with a brush.

For the background, I was inspired by a card of Sandy Allnock. So I first drew the window squares with a grey pencil, and then colored it in partially with a blue one. The areas left white indicate snow has fallen on the windows. To ground the penguins, I made the bottom of the card darker with a range of blues.

Finally, I framed the card by using Chili Pepper cardstock from Lawn Fawn and popping up the scene with craft foam.

I hope you also like this card and it gave you inspiration. Thank you for stopping, and see you next time!
